Madrona today released the 2026 Intelligent Applications 40 (IA40), the annual list of the top private technology companies pioneering the future of applied artificial intelligence. The 2026 cohort showcases the startups defining a market that is shifting from AI experimentation to enterprise-proven ROI—from agentic applications built for a single professional workflow to the infrastructure and aggregation layers that make them possible.
This year’s winners were selected through a rigorous nomination and evaluation process led by Madrona, drawing on quantitative data, PitchBook’s VC Exit Predictor, and input from 72 venture capitalists across 54 firms. More than 450 companies were nominated.
Of last year’s 40 winners, 23 repeated this year—a 58% repeat winner rate, up from 33% the year before. That signals growing durability in this year’s list, especially among late-stage companies. Databricks remains the only company to have appeared on the list every year since its inception in 2021.
“As the tech community voted on this year’s list, it became clear that this next phase of AI implementation lies in the proof,” Madrona managing director Matt McIlwain said. “The winners of the 2026 IA40 show that the biggest opportunity in AI comes from applying technical innovation all the way through to tangible customer value.”

As with previous lists, winning companies span four funding-stage categories—Early, Mid, Late, and Enablers—with an additional three Emerging Enablers featured as rising infrastructure startups with under $100 million raised.
Across the full 2026 list, companies have raised $410 billion in total. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Databricks alone account for $377 billion of that figure, reflecting how much of the AI market’s capital is now concentrated at the frontier-model and infrastructure layer.
Key themes emerging from the 2026 IA40 include:
- Agentic applications, one job at a time: Companies like Serval (IT service management), Sierra (customer service), Gradial (marketing operations), Clay (sales), Legora (legal), and OpenEvidence (healthcare) are applying AI agents to a specific professional workflow rather than building general-purpose tools.
- Trust and governance as their own category: JetStream Security, Fable Security, and AI Underwriting Company have emerged to make enterprises comfortable deploying autonomous agents, spanning governance, human risk management, and insurance.
- A widening capital gap at the frontier: Anthropic, OpenAI, and Databricks are increasingly funded by strategic capital from Amazon, Google, Nvidia, and SoftBank rather than traditional venture, operating on a different scale than the rest of the list.
- Coding as a durable battleground: Lovable, Cognition, CodeRabbit, and Zed Industries continue to pull outsized rounds as AI-assisted and AI-driven development matures.
- Voice as a platform stack: Wispr Flow, ElevenLabs, Cartesia, and HeyGen span dictation, speech, and video, showing voice maturing from a feature into real infrastructure depth.
- Founder pedigree skews toward repeat operators: Leaders like Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor (Sierra), Palmer Luckey (Anduril), and Qasar Younis (Applied Intuition) reflect a pattern of experienced operators driving enterprise trust.
The 2026 winners will be honored at the upcoming IA40 Summit, held September 29–30 in Seattle, hosted by Madrona in partnership with AWS Startups, Google for Startups, Microsoft, Delta, NYSE, and McKinsey & Company.
