NVM Express Publishes Set of NVMe Specifications Enhancing Security, Manageability and Sustainability for AI, Cloud, Enterprise and Client Storage

NVM Express, Inc. today announced the release of all 11 of the NVM Express® (NVMe®) specifications, incorporating new features and engineering change notices (ECNs). These updates represent the next step in the evolution of NVMe technology, with security, management and sustainability extensions to address the growing demands of data-intensive applications in AI, cloud, enterprise and client environments.
The updated specifications include:
- NVMe 2.4 Base Specification
- Command Set Specifications (NVM Command Set 1.3, ZNS Command Set 1.5, Key Value Command Set 1.4, Subsystem Local Memory Command Set 1.3, Computational Programs Command Set 1.3)
- Transport Specifications (NVMe over PCIe® Transport 1.4, NVMe over RDMA Transport 1.3, NVMe over TCP Transport 1.3)
- NVM Express Management Interface (NVMe-MI™) 2.2 Specification
- NVMe Boot 1.4 Specification

- Enhancements for Post-Quantum Cryptography: Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) extends NVMe technology’s security model to remain resilient against future quantum computers that can break today’s encryption, by updating the protocol to support NIST-approved quantum-resistant algorithms and strengthening end-to-end data protection between host and SSD.

Management Optimizations
- PCIe® Exported NVM Subsystem Migration: PCIe Exported NVM Subsystem Migration extends NVMe virtualization to locally attached PCIe SSDs by abstracting physical drives into exported, host-defined virtualized NVM subsystems that stay consistent across migration, enabling seamless VM mobility without storage reconfiguration or heavy hypervisor-based emulation for cloud service providers.
- Rate Limiting: Rate Limiting optimizes storage performance with controller-based Quality of Service (QoS) that enforces bandwidth and IOPS limits directly on NVMe SSDs. This hardware-level approach ensures consistent application performance, protects against resource contention, and improves efficiency in multi-tenant environments.

Sustainability Advancements
- Voltage Monitoring: Voltage Monitoring provides greater visibility into NVMe device health with integrated voltage telemetry. Configurable undervoltage and overvoltage thresholds, real-time alerts, and historical measurement logging help identify power anomalies before they impact performance or reliability.
- Restore Manufacturing Default Settings: Restore Manufacturing Default Settings simplifies device recovery and configuration management by enabling hosts to restore an NVMe subsystem to its factory-default settings. This capability streamlines troubleshooting and ensures consistent system configurations.
